What Should Council be Working On?

 

The past few years have been different, to say the least. The one real constant is that things are perpetually changing. This week partisan petitions were filed for City Council seats and it appears there will be definite changes to our local legislative body. Our question to the citizens of Bucyrus is what do you think our City Council Represenitives should be working on? Here is a short list of things they could be focusing on. We welcome your input on these issues and any other issues you may think of.

·         Improving or adding parks.

·         1st, 2nd and Equal Rights Amendments.

·         Expanding healthcare resources.

·         Expanding educational opportunities.

·         Public transportation.

·         Expanding retail shopping.

·         Addressing recycling and renewable energy opportunities.

·         Lowering utilities and taxes.

·         Affordable housing and homelessness.

·         Poverty, food insecurity, good paying jobs.

·         Saver pedestrian walkways and bikeways

·         Expanding entertainment venues.

·         Diversifying recreation areas.

·          

We hope to have the opportunity to address the people running for these offices with your questions and concerns. It’s your city if you don’t speak up you could be left out.

  A recent Facebook post has declared that a Resolution would be introduced tonight to protect our 2 nd Amendment rights and I would just like to address that. First, I am a little concerned that at the new City Council’s first full meeting that something like this would be presented. Many of you had campaigned on high utility rates, derelict buildings and the lack of good paying jobs. You have a multi-million-dollar sewer separation project going on, a swimming pool that has been out of service for nearly two years, ODNR and the State Attorney General on your back about the Pines Reservoir. In a year you will need to decide if the City will continue with the CJAD, go on their own or create something new. Has anyone got input from the schools, law enforcement, health department, mental health agencies, the voters that put you in those chairs?   No one here is opposing the second amendment, what many of us are opposing is the passage of an unenforceable document that proclaims that our community is against reasonable gun laws to protect our citizens. Recent reporting has reveled that from 2007-17, there were 59 suicides in Crawford County with 34 of those completed using a firearm. In 2018 there were 5 suicides and 10 in 2019. There is a problem in Crawford County and passing legislation such as this would send a message to the citizens, that you just don’t care. In a recent email to Council I challenged them to show me a study or some research that proved more guns made us safer. I have never seen one, even the NRA’s study was debunked. If this is such an important issue to these individuals let them pay to place this on the ballot, just like the Library does, the Sherriff’s Department does and like the Council on Aging is doing right now.
