No one here is opposing the second amendment, what many of us are opposing is the passage of an unenforceable document that proclaims that our community is against reasonable gun laws to protect our citizens. Recent reporting has reveled that from 2007-17, there were 59 suicides in Crawford County with 34 of those completed using a firearm. In 2018 there were 5 suicides and 10 in 2019. There is a problem in Crawford County and passing legislation such as this would send a message to the citizens, that you just don’t care.

In a recent email to Council I challenged them to show me a study or some research that proved more guns made us safer. I have never seen one, even the NRA’s study was debunked.

If this is such an important issue to these individuals let them pay to place this on the ballot, just like the Library does, the Sherriff’s Department does and like the Council on Aging is doing right now. Let them pay for this because it’s not up to the City to use our funds for a specific group. If we do this for this group will we have an obligation to do it for other groups? Pro-life groups, Pro-choice groups, LGBTQ groups, white supremacy groups, when does it stop?

This group has stated that it has signatures to petition Council to accept this resolution, they have also stated that some of these signatures have come from Galion and other towns. Should we accept these signatures, are these registered voters, how do you verify that these are even people? If you need registered voters’ signatures from Bucyrus in opposition to this resolution. We know how to do that, and we can get those.

If Council would like to proceed with this, I must suggest that you bring in some experts within the community, Health Department, Economic Development, Chamber of Commerce, mental health professionals and ask them how will this affect our community, will there be repercussions, will we be stigmatized?

All I ask of City Council and I’m sure most citizens would ask the same is to make a diligent informed decision on this matter. Get some facts don’t rely on what I’m telling you nor what the people that are pressuring you to pass this resolution.
